ADHD

I provide both treatment, for those with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and assessment, for those concerned that they may have ADHD. Initially, my work with ADHD was primarily with children and adolescents, but as the field began to recognize that ADHD is also an issue for adults, I expand my work to include adults. ADHD is a major focus of my practice, and has been so for over 20 years.  Please see my blog on ADHD for a detailed discussion of my views regarding the treatment and assessment of ADHD, as well as for an ongoing discussion of controversies regarding our understanding of ADHD.

Treatment of ADHD:  My approach to working with children (and to a great extent, adolescents) with ADHD, is family oriented.  Children and adolescents with ADHD often need more structure, more guidance, than same aged peers. Thus, family involvement is a critical treatment component. In my work with adults I utilize a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy approach.  There has been an increased body of research supporting the use of CBT with adults.

Assessment of ADHD:  I utilize detailed clinical interviewing, supplemented by rating scales, to assess ADHD.  This model of assessment is strongly endorsed by Russell Barkley, Ph.D., one of the leading experts on ADHD. It is based on Barkley’s understanding that ADHD involves deficits in self-control, not skills, that those with ADHD know what to do, but do not consistently do what they know.
